Small steps, big plans

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Twistillery. Whether it's continuing to invest in renewable energy, limiting our energy use, or using the most eco-friendly equipment and ingredients, we are doing everything in our power to limit our impact on the environment from the start and have grand plans for the future.

Containers to suit the contents

Our gin bottles are made in the UK out of 100% recycled glass (post-consumer waste) which gives them a unique finish, but also means they are infinitely recyclable. They are also super lightweight, at only 500g, making them one of the lightest recycled bottles available. Even this small detail means that transporting the lighter weight bottles saves on our overall carbon footprint. The stopper is made from a combination of sustainably managed FSC wood, and cork shavings, which are a by-product of the cork production process, a material that would otherwise be waste. Even the tamper seal isn’t plastic, its PLA, which is derived from corn starch, and industrially compostable. No harsh chemical plastics!

Contents to suit the container

As you can see, a lot of effort goes in to making sure our containers are pretty eco, but what about the contents? Well, we’ve gone to a lot of effort to ensure that all our ingredients are locally sourced. We currently forage as much as we can and are working on planting anything we can get our hands on, so when you check back here in the future, we aim that 100% of our flavours will be grown on site or foraged locally (check out the farming page for more on this ambitious plan).

CIRCULAR SYSTEMS

Waste, it is everywhere!

However, here at Twistillery we're doing our best to save every drop of water, as much as 600 litres of water for every still run is stored and used for animals and plants.

It doesn't stop there though, our in house waste system (a.k.a. Annie and Hallie the pigs) make light work of the botanical and grain waste.

If we can work out a way then wherever possible we plan to produce, recycle and re-use all on-site.

trees

TREES

In our first year, we more than offset our estimated CO2 emissions by planting trees. The new native woodland that has been planted reduces our carbon footprint and will help keep us heading towards our climate goals.

We've been very lucky this year to be successful candidates in the SMa Wids Woodland Scheme and have planted nearly 600 more trees!

These provide shelter for animals, a biodiverse habitat and offset carbon emissions.

SOLAR

We also use a solar power set up to ensure clean electricity is made on site where possible.

By using small equipment, not only is our gin and beer handcrafted in tiny batches, but it also limits our electricity consumption.

We have plans for the future to expand our renewable energy supplies with increased solar capacity, as well as wind power. Like everything we do, it’s a work in progress but it’s important to have a goal, and something to work towards.
